The Right Questions to Make Sure You Get What You’re Expecting

Unless you’re a party planner or other event specialist, you probably don’t hire photo booth companies very often. So, when you finally do, how do you know what questions to ask your photo booth company, before you book? Unfortunately, you probably don’t know certain key questions that could really make or break your photo booth experience. But I am hoping to be able to solve that problem, and help you weed out the good from the bad when it comes to the photo booth company you decide to hire.

Photo Booth Basics:

Is my date available?

This one should be your first question, since any further details won’t matter much if they aren’t available on your big day!

What Booth Types Do You Have Available?

If you haven’t already read our blog on the best photo booth type for your event, or watched our YouTube video on the topic, they’re great resources to see what booth types you’re interested in. From small budget or small venue, to big corporate ideas, there are probably more types than you think!

Do you offer prints?

A method to lower costs, for photo booth businesses and their customers, is to go digital only. However, if you’re hoping for prints make sure to ask a couple of questions to make sure you get what you’re expecting.

If so, what sizes of prints do you offer?

Prints can come in a couple of common sizes, 2″x6″, like a typical photo booth strip, or 4″x6″, like a full sized photo with extra space around the pictures for customizing.

If so, how many prints does each guests receive?

If you’re expecting a group shot of five guests to each receive one copy of the group photo, make sure you’re clear on the meaning of “unlimited prints” with your photo booth company. Some may try to offer only two strips per shot, and that would be unfortunate to discover too late.

What props are included?

Some photo booth companies include no props, or very few props, while others bring boxes and bins full! Make sure you know what you’re expecting, and what is provided. Some examples of props include signs, hats, boas, gloves, inflatables, microphones, and stick props. You’ll want to ask about materials if quality is important. Cardstock props on thin wooden sticks may not be on par with your high end event, but may be fine for a kid’s party. If cleanliness is important to you, you can verify the sanitization practices of your company for their props between events.

What backdrop options are available?

From enclosures to green screens to magazine booths, backdrops make a pretty big difference in the photo booth experience. Make sure that you know what size the backdrops are. Or, more practically, how many people can fit in the frame?

Are you licensed/insured?

If you’re “hiring” someone to run your photo booth as a favor, you probably won’t need to worry about this. However, if you’re hiring a company to bring in a lot of expensive equipment, this may be something to look into. Like most insurance, it’s better to have it and not need it. Along these lines, make sure you read the contract!

What are your requirements?

Your photo booth company should know how much space they will need, if they require access to an outlet, and if they will need wi-fi access. For the most part, outside of these needs photo booth companies shouldn’t require much. They should be bringing lights as well, but you can always double check.

Are there any extra fees?

From “travel fees” to “idle time” you’ll want to make sure you’re only paying what you expect to pay. Beware of any companies that charge you for set up or tear down time. Some fees may make sense, such as an overtime fee if your party is having fun and you want the company to stay longer than planned.

Take note of any payment deadlines, cancellation fees, and refund policies!

Photo Booth Extras

What customization options are available?

Some companies can custom wrap their photo booth, some can provide custom backdrops, and others you can only customize the photo background. If customization is important to you, either to really highlight a theme or to emphasize a brand at a corporate event, you’ll want to ask what the options are and if there is extra cost.

Can the booth be unattended?

Some companies can drop off the booth, allow you to use the booth throughout the party, and then pick it up afterwards. Be sure to ask if this is something you may be interested in. It may save you a few extra dollars. Having an attendant or even two can be really helpful.

Do you provide a sharing station or digital copies post-event?

Some companies have a sharing station where you can text or e-mail yourself the photos or videos directly. Some companies provide a USB drive of photos or videos after the event. If you have a preference, be sure to ask. Be aware that this may come at an extra cost if your booth does primarily prints.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a reputable photo booth company to provide high quality results, and not over charge or skimp on your end results, make sure you ask the right questions. To see this post in video form, check it out here.
